I say that because, before I put the batteries in I tried to run it on the charging unit and it would not work. So maybe the batteries need to be installed for it to work (not normal but acceptable). I also sent the defective unit back yesterday. again Thank you for your prompt service, and i will recommend you to all my friends. Rick
